One day, Matilda Kahl embarrassed herself. She spent all morning trying things on and taking them off, searching for the perfect outfit. When she finally got to her job at an creative advertising agency, everyone at her important meeting was already there.
To add insult to injury, Kahl’s sweater was on inside out. From that moment on, she knew she couldn’t stress out about her appearance.
“The frustration I felt walking into that meeting late remained with me. Should it really be this hard? I knew my male colleagues were taken seriously no matter what they wore—and I highly doubted they put in as much sartorial time and effort as I had. But gender issues aside, I needed to come up with a solution to simplify this morning struggle,” she revealed in Harper’s Bazaar.
Kahl decided to do something unusual, instead of picking an outfit out everyday, she would wear the exact same thing. She bought 15 identical white shirts, and a few identical pairs of black trousers. It wasn’t cheap that first day shopping, but it saved her hundreds in the years to come.
“I shopped all the pieces in one day. It burned a hole in my wallet to say the least, but in the long run, it has saved me—and will continue to save me—more money than I could imagine,” she said.
At first people thought Kahl had lost a bet, but she clarified it was her choice to worry less about her looks. Years later, she is happy with her radical decision.
“Today, I not only feel great about what I wear, I don’t think about what I wear,” she said.
