We’ve all heard “adopt, don’t shop” before. But that doesn’t mean that we’ve all taken it to heart.
It is incredibly difficult to resist those adorable puppies in the puppy store windows. I have fallen victim to their adorable faces and wished that I could take one home. However, to do so would most likely be supporting the terrible puppy mill industry.
Puppy mills are places where the same female dogs give birth constantly while being confined to a tiny, filthy cage. It is absolutely no way to live, without love, without comfort, without any hope at all. Many puppy mill dogs lost their ability to walk and see properly from being so cramped up and kept in dark spaces, along with a whole slew of other health issues.
The puppies you see in puppy stores are oh-so-often coming from puppy mills, even though the owners may be convincing in assuring you they get them from reliable breeders.
Former puppy mill affiliate, New Jersey puppy store owner Pat Youmans, used to absolutely hate the protesters that used to picket outside of his store. Then, one day, he decided to speak with their leader, Alan Braslow, for four whole hours. Pat learned so much about all of the dogs in need of rescue, and started to formulate a plan with Alan to completely stop his partnership with the puppy mills, which he admits to reporters are absolutely terrible.
Pat’s store now adopts out rescue dogs exclusively, brought into New Jersey mostly from southern regions. They go at $ 500 each, which is half of what puppy mill dogs cost. The money goes towards vet bills, transportation, as well as back to local shelters and back into his business.
He is still receiving backlash for running as a for-profit instead of as a non-profit, but in my humble opinion, I think Pat has made a full 180 turn in ethics, and is doing a truly great thing. This is his business, and after getting the right information, he was able to make the right decision.
