The Bachelor Winter Games can be here!
ABC’s sports-themed love competition series premieres on Tuesday, along with we’ll see plenty of familiar faces through The Bachelor universe, including some throwbacks!
One such woman can be Lesley Murphy, who was last on TV for Sean Lowe’s season of The Bachelor. ET caught up with the travel blogger about competing on Bachelor Winter Games along with the life-changing surgery she had just months before filming.
ET: Why come back to TV for Bachelor Winter Games? You never did Bachelor in Paradise.
Lesley Murphy: I didn’t go on Paradise because to me the item’s just a lot of drinking on a beach along with which just wasn’t a draw for me, nevertheless This kind of brings so many cultures together, so many different competitions. When they asked me to go on the item, I had an immediately Great gut reaction about the item. The show was fun, competitive along with romantic in a winter wonderland.
What can you tell us about how Winter Games actually works?
I best described the item as Bachelor Pad, Bachelor in Paradise along with Survivor kinda had a baby. There are about four competitions, plus [one] during a rose ceremony. [The show can be] broken off into a women’s heat along having a men’s heat along with the winner of both of those heats gets a date card. They’re gold-plated date cards.
How did everyone deal with language along with cultural barriers, yet live in a house together along with date each some other?
There were a lot of language barriers, predominantly with Yuki [Kimura] through Japan. along with she’s going to steal the show. You couldn’t truly understand what she was saying along with vice versa. She truly fell for Ben [Higgins]. We’re at [one] rose ceremony along with the item’s the kissing competition, along with different cultures treat PDA differently. So we have Luke [Pell] along with Stassi [Yaramchuk] — we are made to kiss publicly in This kind of competition along with we have three judges through past seasons of The Bachelor — and they, for lack of a better word, are pretty insensitive to the fact which not every culture can be the same. So the item took a lot for Stassi to kiss Luke in public along with these judges just were just ringing her out, saying, “We didn’t see any connection. We didn’t see any chemistry.” nevertheless she was so empowering along with stood up there along with said, “You will not shame me. We don’t do This kind of in my culture along with I won’t take your shame whatsoever.” Mic drop! the item was amazing.
Who provides the biggest drama for the show?
A lot of the item can be going to be about Ashley I. along with her significant some other along with their sexual chemistry. There’s been a lot of background about which along with we’ll see the item play out again, maybe within the fantasy suites.
How did people fare athletically?
There wasn’t a lot of athleticism on the slopes! We had a few Canadians along with they killed the item on pretty much everything. I don’t know what happened to the Americans. Dean [Unglert] does very well. He does This kind of little stunt where he skis through the finish line backwards just to prove a point, nevertheless he grew up in Aspen, so he had an upper hand on everybody. Ben today lives in Denver, so he’s pretty Great.
Dean didn’t contain the best reputation after Bachelor in Paradise. How does he do on Winter Games?
Dean has done [shows] three times in a year along with so he knows what he’s doing, nevertheless he also knows what he did wrong on the last one. We saw him come off of Rachel’s season as This kind of very Great, nevertheless confused, young guy. I don’t know what happened with Paradise, nevertheless he kind of went off the rails. today, cut to Bachelor Winter Games, yeah, he definitely redeemed himself. I think he knows what he did wrong.
There are rumors you along with Dean made a connection. How did things end up for you?
I had the time of my life. I was there until the very end along with you’ll see how the item ends. There are four couples at the very end of the item. No proposals. [There can be an international relationship.] They had a lot more heavy conversations to get through at the end because how do you make which work? I came off [of the show] very, very happy.
You did This kind of show after a major personal experience: You chose to have a double mastectomy after discovering you had the BRCA2 gene along with chronicled your surgeries on social media. What was which like?
the item taught me a lot about what I’m looking for within the future. During my first doctor’s appointments, I filmed the item not truly knowing what I’d do with which documentation. Maybe I’ll put the item out there, maybe I won’t. along with then, International Women’s Day came about in March, along with I was like, “What message can I put out there?” along with then the item hit me like a wall of bricks. “Oh yeah, I can spice This kind of up. Put This kind of out there for everyone to see. This kind of can be what I’m doing. This kind of can be what a year can be going to look like. I’m not going to be going to any completely new along with exciting destinations. I’m going to be comatose in a hospital bed.” which taught me so much about opening up along with being authentic along with also the power of social media. I think random strangers helped me heal in ways I didn’t know which which was possible. I threw caution to the wind when I went on The Bachelor once. I threw caution to the wind when I quit my job along with commenced a travel blog. I threw caution to the wind when I did the surgery, same with Bachelor Winter Games. “Yeah, I haven’t been on TV in several years, nevertheless why not?!” I’ve done This kind of before, I can do This kind of again. completely new year, completely new me!
Did you have any concerns or any difficult moments doing these athletic activities, having gone through surgery last July?
the item has taken awhile to get back to where I was. I kept trying to push the item along with trying to do these same exercises along with the item was probably entirely too soon. I’m not a very patient person, so I didn’t give the item a lot of time. nevertheless the human body can be truly an amazing thing. the item heals each along with every day. When producers asked me about coming on Winter Games along with were like, “Can you even do which? Can you even participate in these things?” By which point, my doctors had signed off along with everything: “Yeah, do whatever you want. Your implants are going to be just fine.” the item was major surgery along with I didn’t want to mess anything up … My plastic surgeons did a great job of rebuilding along with I don’t want to take which along with backtrack. What if I fall downhill skiing? which was a huge concern, nevertheless the item didn’t happen!
What about dating after having a double mastectomy along with then getting implants? Was which once you’d gotten romantic since the surgery?
You bring up a great point! (Laughs.) I had an ex of mine who went through the surgeries with me, nevertheless we broke up during the second one, so he wasn’t truly with me during the healing process. Cut to Bachelor Winter Games. I could tell This kind of story all day along with I can be all for early detection along with early screening. nevertheless to actually tell This kind of to somebody you’re romantically involved with along with telling them what to possibly expect, I’ve never done which before. producing sure which, in along with of itself, was a little frightening.
What were your big takeaways through the surgeries?
I want people to know which if they do come down with This kind of diagnosis or This kind of gene, they can absolutely go through This kind of surgery along with the item will be empowering after you’re on the some other side of the item. Kind of the same with reality TV! If you have a Great head on your shoulders along with you’re not going to be the villain of a show, you can learn so much about yourself. along with by opening up, the item’s This kind of weird, therapeutic thing going on reality TV. You’re forced to talk about your emotions along with who you are along with where you want to be within the future. If you’re going to continue down a path along with not pull yourself out of your comfort zone, how can you truly grow? 2017 was a big year of growth, for sure — in more ways than one.
The Bachelor Winter Games premieres Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
