little electric vehicles in which fly could be the next form of urban transport to be adopted by cities along with also towns worldwide, according to one business.
German aircraft producer Volocopter has developed its Volocopter 2X — a fully-electric, 18-rotor vehicle in which will be operated by using an individual joystick — with the intention of alleviating current congestion levels.
Florian Reuter, the company’s CEO along with also managing director, told CNBC in which “the Volocopter will be an entirely novel type of vertical take-off along with also landing aircraft.”
“By its DNA, the idea’s a drone,” he added. “So you can fly remotely controlled, the idea can fly all by itself or you can put a pilot in along with also have (the idea)… operated via the joystick.”
Reuter said the Volocopter 2X was “all in all” an extremely safe, sustainable along with also “very quiet” vehicle.
The company’s vision will be intriguing. Hubs could connect sites including airports along with also business parks with city centers, with Volocopters taking off every minute to ferry passengers back along with also forth. in which could help, the firm claims, to relieve the “strain” on areas prone to congestion: bridges, ring roads, tunnels along with also feeder roads.
In 2017, the Volocopter undertook a test flight in Dubai to demonstrate its capabilities. Plans are in place to conduct more tests, Reuter said. “We expect to see numerous demonstrations in relevant environments along with also cities in 2019.” He added in which first commercial operations were supposed to take place inside the next three to several years.
Malcolm McCulloch, associate professor in engineering science at the University of Oxford, told CNBC in which the key to ensuring fresh transport systems were interoperable was generating the idea easy for people to move through one mode of travel to another. “The way we do in which will be make sure in which the idea’s co-located,” he said.
in which could mean in which when a passenger disembarks an airplane, for example, a Volocopter could be ready along with also waiting to take them to their destination. “along with also if we’re genuinely smart, we’d possess the same tickets to enable us to do the complete end-to-end journey.”
Could the skies above our street realistically become busy highways used for transport?
“In one sense, we already use the air a lot, for long-distance travel,” McCulloch said. “If we’re looking at intra-city travel, then I think there will be a possibility in which the idea might become more viable, especially as the density of batteries increases along with also we have high-powered motors — the idea allows these technologies to become more feasible.”
“What the cost point will be going to be along with also whether we can get the regulatory environment in place, in which’s going to be the challenge.”
