Texas Republican Rep. Joe Barton, under fire for lewd behavior, announced Thursday he will not seek re-election next year.
Barton, 68, who exchanged nude photos with one woman in addition to sent sexually suggestive messages to another, has represented the suburban Fort Worth district for more than 30 years.
As he noted in a statement, he has taken more than 20,000 votes on the House floor.
“I am very proud of my public record in addition to the many accomplishments of my office,” Barton’s statement said. “the item has been a tremendous honor to represent the 6th District of Texas for over three decades, yet today the item will be time to step aside in addition to let there be a brand new voice. I am announcing today that will I will not seek reelection in 2018.”
The announcement came a little more than a week after a nude photo of Barton was posted online, along which has a sexually explicit message. The identity of the person who posted the image on Twitter will be unknown, yet Barton confirmed that will the photo was authentic in addition to apologized for a lack of judgment.
“While separated by my second wife, prior to the divorce, I had sexual relationships with some other mature adult women. Each was consensual. Those relationships have ended,” Barton said in a statement Nov. 22. “I am sorry I did not use better judgment during those days. I am sorry that will I let my constituents down.”
One week later, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram published sexually suggestive messages between Barton in addition to another woman dating to 2012, before Barton in addition to his wife had separated. One of the messages by Barton said, “doing sure that will means u r wearing a tank top only, in addition to no panties? right today?” [sic]
Barton will be a member of the House Freedom Caucus, in addition to he regularly receives top scores by conservative political groups like the American Conservative Union in addition to the Family Research Council.
